Socialist International Women (SIW) is currently hosting its council in Mexico City . Women from 32 countries gathered to discuss on 'Declaration and Platform for action Beijing + 20' and looking at the concrete stepts that have been taken to improve the position of women since the UN Beijing Womens Conference held in 1995.
PES Women President Zita Gurmai and PES Deputy Secretary General Marije Laffeber took part in the discussions in Mexico. With regards to the achievements, the process is encouraging. Today more women then ever have been able to acquire better economic, social and political status than their mothers. SIW believe that there cannot be sustainable and equitable development without the participation of women. However, there is still a lot of work to be done, especially with respect towards the Millenium Development Goals. It has also become obvious that achievements and successes are not guarantees, since progressive policies for women are still under attack.
2015 is the year the Beijing platform for action will celebrate it's 20th anniversary. The council in Mexico adopted a progressive agenda for worldwide action, learn more about it here: http://www.socintwomen.org/
